MISSION FOR SEAFARERS & CHURCH MISSIONARY SOCIETY HOME COLLECTON BOXES. The generosity towards our charities continues and the boxes yielded a total similar to last year despite a falling off in number due to ‘natural erosion’. £144.69 has been sent to the former and £86.68 to the latter. Grateful thanks to all who contributed.
Please consider having a box at home, so that the number of boxes can be built up again. Support for these worthy causes is urgently needed and much appreciated. It all mounts up! Contact Diane Brewster (580 187).

Gift Aided Giving.
If you are an infrequent visitor who uses white envelopes please consider using a set of coloured envelopes – just use the ones needed and throw away the others. It makes filling in the tax reclaimed form a very simple exercise if the white envelopes can be kept for very occasional visitors. If you have not yet received your coloured envelopes or wish to obtain a coloured set please contact Anne Wesley (10872 580043).
Anne has a store of coloured envelopes and has recycled spares from the past by redating/labelling which has saved lots of money!!. If these are used and white envelopes are reduced there will also be a significant saving in printing costs.

CHURCH FLOWERS. The rota for flower arranging at the back of the church still has many gaps. Further volunteers would be welcomed with open arms. I am sure that we would not wish to see the church without fresh flowers. Perhaps you have a friend might be encouraged to display their skills occasionally?!
Please contact Margaret Davis (580 714) for details.

January 2012 Calendar

January 7, 2012

Happy New Year!

Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions? Whether you have or not I have one that I would like to suggest to us all. It is to

‘see others as God sees them’

For God sees people so differently to the way we do. The New Testament is full of examples.

When Jesus met the woman at the well, people saw a woman who had had 5 failed marriages. But God saw someone who would witness to the people of Samaria.

When people saw a blind man, God saw someone who would receive his sight.

When people saw a lame man, God saw someone who would pick up his bed and walk away.

When people saw Matthew as a hated tax collector, God saw a disciple.

When people saw Zacchaeus as a crook, God saw a searching heart.

When people saw Mary wasting money on perfume to anoint Jesus’ feet, God saw a grateful and generous heart.

When people saw impulsive Peter, God saw the leader of the early church.

When people saw Roman soldiers mocking and violent, God saw blind men who didn’t know what they were doing.

Let us pray that in 2012 God will help us see others as He sees them; to remember that each one of us is created in God’s image and is the object of His love. May we always see the potential in one another and encourage each other to flourish in becoming the people God has created us to be.

‘Prayer is the heartbeat of everything. Anything without prayer has no pulse.’
At the beginning of this New Year please join with others to pray for our United Benefice on Monday 9th Jan at 7.00pm at Trelowen, Rosevine or Tuesday 10th Jan at 3pm St Gerrans church. (You are welcome to come to both!)

Gift Aided Giving.
Please find your Gift Aid envelopes for this year at the rear of the church. Sorry for the delay but I have recycled spares from the past and redating/labelling took longer than I expected (but has saved lots of money!!).
If you regularly use white envelopes (even once a month) please consider using a set of coloured envelopes – just use the ones you need and throw away the others. It makes filling in the tax reclaimed form much easier if the collections are collated as I go along which is a very simple exercise with the coloured envelope system. Many thanks. Anne.
To obtain a coloured set please contact Anne Wesley (10872 580043)

If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator;
If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist;

But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Saviour.

Monthly Calendar December 2011

December 3, 2011

ADVENT SPACE

Advent, along with Lent, is traditionally kept by the church as a penitential season as we prepare for the coming of Christ. Advent was introduced into the church’s calendar in the fourth century and was originally kept as a season of fasting and whilst we may no longer fast we are still encouraged to prepare ourselves as we wait in stillness in God’s presence for the Lord’s coming.

For some, stillness is very difficult; maybe because there always seems to be something that must be done. But maybe we find stillness difficult because we find it uncomfortable when our mind wanders in the silence to difficult, challenging or painful areas that we prefer to leave buried.

The season of Advent reminds us that as we wait in stillness, Jesus will come with us into those difficult, challenging or painful areas to heal, to comfort, to forgive, to restore, to strengthen and to bring courage. We need have no fear of the silence when we share it with Him. It will become for us a place of transformation.

Advent is a time where many of us find the pace of life more frenetic than usual. We may find it more difficult to take the time to be still on our own. For that reason at St Philleigh on Wedw 7th Dec between 7 and 8pm and at St Gerrans on Tuesday 13th Dec between 3 and 4pm we shall keep an ADVENT SPACE. This will be a time of quiet stillness for reflection, contemplation, reading, thinking, praying, waiting in God’s presence-or just doing nothing. Please come…to either or both.

(A final thought..set to ‘As with gladness men of old’.)
As with madness we prepare
For this festive time of year
As we rush and count the days
Advent passes in a haze
So may our feet take us to,
Places where we will meet you.

We warmly welcome all attending our services.
We are always so happy for visitors to be with us – please introduce yourselves and join us for a coffee and chat after morning service.

CAROLS FOR CRISIS 14th DECEMBER 7.00pm. This will follow the usual popular format with St Anthony Noyse and the Roseland Community Choir. There is no charge but donations welcomed and all money raised will go to CHRISTMAS CRISIS – charity for the homeless – who urgently need our support.
Donations of red wine are sought for the mulled wine. There will be a list at the back of the church which you are asked to complete so that arrangements can be coordinated. Alternatively contact Gill Mace 580 149 or Margaret Davis 580714. There is also a raffle and suitable prizes will be gratefully received.

There will be a short carol service at Eschol House on Thursday 15th December at 1.30pm. If you are able to support this would you kindly let Jill know as she would appreciate help singing the carols with two readings.

Can you help? About 8 years ago Timothy Davis completed a project on St Gerrans church and its history. It was loaned to several people who read it and passed it on. Timothy now would like to have the project and wonders if anyone knows where it is now. If you can shed any light on its whereabouts would you please contact Timothy’s grandmother, Pearl Sutton on 580863.

CHURCH CLEANING. REMINDER. Traditionally volunteers meet on the Second Monday of the month at 2.00pm, though access is available at any other time to suit (Contact Pat Chaffin 580 854 – our Verger and Coordinator). Volunteers would be much appreciated to swell the band and lighten the load – particularly with Christmas fast approaching. The more the merrier and the less the commitment. Gender and age is no barrier!!
